HC Deb 17 December 1959 vol 615 c256W
124. Mr. Aitken

asked the Minister of Pensions and National Insurance if he will make a statement as to reciprocal arrangements on social security with Canada.

Mr. Boyd-Carpenter

I am glad to be able to tell the House that arrangements have been made to enable people in this country to qualify, subject to certain conditions, for family allowances, retirement pensions and unemployment benefit by virtue of residence or employment in Canada. These arrangements are set out in a letter sent by the United Kingdom High Commissioner in Ottawa to the Canadian Minister of National Health and Welfare, and in the Minister's reply. The full text of the letter and reply will shortly be laid before Parliament. The arrangements will come into force on 1st January, 1960.
