HC Deb 17 December 1959 vol 615 c217W
85. Mr. H. Hynd

asked the Minister of State for Commonwealth Relations what is the present state of land distribution in Swaziland as between the Swazis and white settlers; and what mineral rights have been recognised for Swazis.

Mr. Alport

About 53 per cent. of the land in Swaziland is held by Swazi and about 47 per cent. by Europeans. Before granting permission to prospect or mine within a Native Area, the Resident Commissioner is obliged to consider any representations from the Paramount Chief in Council; and any payments made by way of compensation, surface rent or otherwise in respect of prospecting or mining within such area must be paid to the Swazi Nation or otherwise applied for their benefit.
