HC Deb 17 December 1959 vol 615 cc226-7W
Mr. Wingfield Digby

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food why the Forestry Commission's industrial labour force was reduced by 666 in the year ended 30th September, 1958; to what extent it has been further reduced since; and what is the reason for these reductions.

Mr. John Hare

The Commission's labour force fell from 13,040 to 12,384 during the year ended 30th September, 1958, a drop of 656. As the Commissioners stated in their Annual Report, this was due partly to a temporary reduction in the planting programme and partly to a more efficient use of manpower. By 30th September, 1959, the number employed had risen to 12,512. an increase of 128 during the year.

Mr. Wingfield Digby

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food how many forestry workers of the Forestry Commission are now established; and what is the percentage of the total of their industrial manpower.

Mr. John Hare

On 30th September, 1959, the Forestry Commission employed 2,818 established employees, forming 22.5 per cent. of the total industrial manpower.
