HC Deb 17 December 1959 vol 615 c209W
71. Mr. N. Pannell

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department when the Department of Criminal Science at Cambridge commenced its study of crimes of violence in the Metropolitan Police district: and when he expects to receive its final report.

Mr. R. A. Butler

The study of crimes of violence in the Metropolitan Police district was started in 1955, but it has unavoidably been interrupted to enable the small staff of the Department of Criminal Science to undertake other urgent work. Examples of this are an important study on sexual offences, which was given priority to assist the Wolfenden Committee, and a study on attendance centres, which was expedited to be available to the Ingleby Committee. I expect to receive the first part of the report on crimes of violence at the beginning of next February and the remainder during the year.
