§ Mr. Iremongerasked the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether he has studied the resolution sent to him by the British Honduras Chamber of Commerce on 23rd June, 1959, concerning certain actions of the Comptroller of Customs; and what action thereupon is contemplated by the Colony's Government.
§ Mr. J. AmeryI have seen the resolution which was addressed to the Governor. The various complaints against the Comptroller of Customs in respect of his administration of the Customs Department were investigated by an official committee of Government officers set up for this purpose by the British Honduras Government. Their report was subsequently considered by the Government and the Governor himself met representatives of the Chamber. On 19th September the Government conveyed its findings to the Chamber of Commerce. A number of the Chamber's requests in regard to Customs procedure were conceded and the Comptroller has agreed to take certain steps to meet their point of view; but the Government concluded that there was not sufficient justification to make a recommendation for the removal of the Comptroller.
