§ 104. Mr. Hector Hughesasked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he is now in a position to make a further statement about the design of future bank notes to meet the special needs of blind persons.
§ Sir E. BoyleI would refer the hon. Gentleman to the reply given by my right hon. Friend the Chancellor of the Exchequer on 15th December.
§ Mr. Bowenasked the Chancellor of the Exchequer (1) what organisations, other than those representing blind persons, he consulted before coming to a decision in connection with the proposed new Bank of England note issue;
(2) whether he is aware of the inconvenience of the size and design of the proposed new Bank of England note issue; what representations have been received from the Central Council of Bank Staff Associations relative thereto; and whether, in the circumstances, he is prepared to give further consideration to this matter.
§ Sir E. BoyleThe only decision which my right hon. Friend was required to take in connection with the new series of Bank of England notes concerned the denominations which should be issued.
I understand that the Bank of England has received representations from a 228W number of bodies including the Central Council of Bank Staff Associations. As has already been made clear in regard to the representations made on behalf of the blind, the Bank is giving further consideration to the problems involved.
