Mr. Callaghan

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if the figure of 3,487 civil staff shown on page 8 of the 1958 Report of the Commissioner of Police of the Metropolis represents the total employment of civil staff of all grades in the Metropolitan Police; and how many of them are direct replacements of former policemen.

The number of civil staff of all grades employed with the Metropolitan Police on 31st December, 1958, was 3,405; this total includes 1,584 part-time school crossing partrols and telephonists. The Receiver's staff are not included. The Commissioner estimate that 623 member of the civil staff were then employed in direct replacement of police officer.
