HC Deb 15 December 1959 vol 615 cc143-4W
Mr. Wilkins

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether he is aware that the consignment of canned meat, which was recently imported into Avonmouth Docks from the Union of South Africa and rejected by the Bristol Medical Officer of Health on the grounds of its inferior quality, arrived in error and was intended for consumption by the native population of Africa; and which Colonies import such inferior quality meat for native consumption.

Mr. J. Amery

In the statements which I have seen there has been no suggestion that this canned meat was intended for consumption by the local population in any British Colonial territories in Africa. I have no detailed information about the qualities of meat imported into the various Colonial Territories. Imports of meat are normally made through private commercial channels, subject of course to regulations about the sale of foodstuffs made under Public Health and other legislation by individual territories.
