HC Deb 14 December 1959 vol 615 cc105-6W
95. Colonel Beamish

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food if he will now announce the names of the small group of scientists that he is setting up to examine the use made of toxic sprays in agriculture and to make proposals as to whether more research is necessary; what their terms of reference will be; and in what form, and when, they will report.

Mr. John Hare

The Minister for Science and I, together with the Secretary of State for Scotland and the Minister of Health are still considering the composition of this group, but we have in mind that it will consist of about eight scientists comprising, among others, my chief scientific advisers on agriculture and on food, the director of the Plant Pathology Laboratory, and persons nominated by the Medical Research Council, the Agricultural Research Council, the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, and the Nature Conservancy. The terms of reference will beTo study the need for further research into the effects of the use of toxic chemicals in agriculture and food storage, and to make recommendations". The group will report to the four Ministers to whom I have referred, but I clearly cannot, at this stage, say when its report will be available.
