HC Deb 10 December 1959 vol 615 cc57-8W
Mr. Russell

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies to what extent consumers in Colonial Territories still lack supplies of pure water without having to boil it themselves; and what progress is being made in providing it.

Mr. J. Amery

In most urban areas supplies of pure water are available; in rural areas it is the aim of the Governments concerned to provide potable water by means of deep wells and suitable catchment areas. Between 1946 and 1958 Her Majesty's Government have provided through the Colonial Development and Welfare Acts over£12,500,000 for water supplies and sanitation. This sum is of course additional to provision for these purposes from local resources.
