asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what he estimates the cost to the revenue would have been in the current financial year if he had raised the Surtax level to£3,000 and£4,000, respectively.

If the rates of Surtax now charged on successive slices of income above the present starting points were charged on similar successive slices starting at points£1,000 or£2,000 higher the cost in a full year would be£47 million or£75 million, respectively.
