HC Deb 10 December 1959 vol 615 c58W
56. Mr. G. Thomas

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies what is the number of children attending school in the Seychelles; and what is the number who are provided with a midday meal in school because of the poverty of their parents.

Mr. J. Amery

5,462 children attend school in Seychelles, of whom 364 are provided with mid-day meals, and 1,196 with snacks. This is done not necessarily on grounds of poverty but also, for example, if a pupil's home is distant from the school and the parents cannot or will not provide food away from home.
