HC Deb 10 December 1959 vol 615 cc65-6W
91. Mr. V. Yates

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what representations he has received from the Birmingham Watch Committee on police allowances; and what reply he has made.

Mr. R. A. Butler

The Birmingham Watch Committee has suggested to me that it is for consideration whether there ought not to be power to pay a special allowance in those areas in which there is serious difficulty in recruiting police. In reply, I have said that I understand the concern of the Watch Committee, but have pointed out that any proposals which it may wish to make for alterations of police pay or allowances should be addressed to the official side of the Police Council for Great Britain.
