HC Deb 09 December 1959 vol 615 cc52-3W
97. Mr. Donnelly

asked the Civil Lord of the Admiralty what arrangements he makes to examine the scripts of proposed speeches by senior officers of the Royal Navy.

Mr. C. Ian Orr-Ewing

Senior officers of the Royal Navy, and all other members of the naval service, are required by the regulations to obtain Admiralty permission before publishing, in a speech or otherwise, any information relating to the naval service; or anything of a controversial nature affecting other departments of the public service or relating to matters of public policy. When the subject demands it, scripts are examined in the Admiralty before permission is given.
