asked the Minister Education what was the average pupil teacher ratio for grammar schools and for secondary modern schools in 1958 and 1959.

The pupil teacher ratios, including the full-time teaching equivalent of part-time teachers, were as follows:

—	Modern Schools	Grammar Schools
January, 1958	…	22.2	18.3
January, 1959	…	22.5	18.6

Between these two dates the number of senior pupils increased by 241,000 to 2,717,000.
