HC Deb 03 December 1959 vol 614 c156W
102. Mr. Biggs-Davison

asked the Minister of State for Commonwealth Relations whether he is aware that more Italians than British migrated to Canada in 1958, and that migration to Canada from the British Isles decreased by 29 per cent. in the first nine months of this year; and what consultations have been held, and action taken, by his Department and the Overseas Migration Board to ensure that a proper proportion of new Canadians are of British origin.

Mr. Alport

The answer to the first part of the Question is, Yes.

With regard to the second and third parts, the number of persons emigrating from the United Kingdom to Canada varies from year to year and is, of course, dependent on the voluntary decision of individuals. Economic circumstances are an important factor influencing these voluntary decisions and I would invite my hon. Friend's attention in this connection to paragraph 49 of the fourth Report of the Oversea Migration Board.
