HC Deb 03 December 1959 vol 614 cc143-4W
26. Mr. Shepherd

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what progress has been made towards the setting up of decimal standards in the United Kingdom.

Mr. Barber

As my hon. Friend may be aware, a Committee of the British Association for the Advancement of Science is at present conducting an inquiry into the metric system, including the desirability and practicability of a change-over to a decimal currency system in this country, and the adoption of a system of decimal weights and measures. It would be premature to take any decisions in this field until the results of this inquiry are available.
