asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department the total number of prisoners on remand awaiting trial on 1st October and 1st November, 1959, respectively; and what was the prison population on those dates.

I regret that the information requested is not readily available with respect to these dates but on 6th October, 1959, 1,513 prisoners out of a prison population of 22,466 were classified as untried. The corresponding figures on 3rd November, 1959, were 1,287 and 22,348 respectively.
