HC Deb 30 April 1959 vol 604 cc150-1W
8. Mr. J. Johnson

asked the Under-Secretary of State for Commonwealth Relations what conclusion he has reached regarding a further geological survey in Basutoland.

Mr. Alport

My noble Friend is well aware of the importance to the economy of Basutoland of the discovery of mineral resources there. The High Commissioner is at present considering an application for a C.D. & W. grant under 1959 legislation for a geological survey of the Territory. In the meantime, diamond prospecting is proceeding, and the prospector has undertaken to report to the administration any occurrences of other minerals which he finds.
