HC Deb 29 April 1959 vol 604 cc122-3W
80. Mr. Atkins

asked the Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation what form of contract is entered into by the masters and crew of the tank landing ships which he operates; and whether he is satisfied that these contracts give him sufficient authority, including the authority to order these men into action.

Mr. Hay

The contracts for masters and crews of these landing ships are arranged by the commercial company appointed to manage the ships. These contracts follow the standard form of Merchant Navy agreements for voyages abroad. As the ships are intended for use in the logistic, not the assault, role there is no question of the contracts including authority to order masters and crews into action.
