HC Deb 28 April 1959 vol 604 c101W
4. Mr. M. Macmillan

asked the Minister of Housing and Local Government and Minister for Welsh Affairs what progress was made with slum clearance during 1958.

Mr. H. Brooke

The quarterly Housing Returns for England and Wales and for Scotland, published today, show that during 1958 local authorities in England and Wales demolished or closed just over 55,000 houses and in Scotland over 12,800. About 160,000 people were rehoused in England and Wales during the year, and over 45,000 are estimated to have been rehoused in Scotland.

The year 1958 marks, therefore, the achievment of the Government aim of 200,000 people a year to be rehoused from the slums.
