HC Deb 28 April 1959 vol 604 cc112-3W
79. Sir A. Hurd

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if, in response to representations made to him, he has now reviewed the car mileage allowances payable to members of the consultative committees of the nationalised industries, agricultural tribunals and others who use their own cars for attending meetings of such Government bodies; and what action he will take in the matter.

Mr. Amory

Yes. I have authorised a rate of 6d. a mile for members of tribunals and other voluntary or fee-paid people who use their private cars on Government business. This rate is an alternative to the Civil Service rates, which give 3¾d. a mile for small annual mileages and between 7d. and 8d. a mile if mileages exceed 1,000 miles a year.

The travelling expenses of members of consultative councils in the electricity and gas industries are reimbursed by the Electricity Council and the gas boards respectively at rates which are now based on the rates paid to the staff of these industries.
