HC Deb 27 April 1959 vol 604 c85W
79. Mr. P. Williams

asked the Minister of Labour how many people normally engaged in shipbuilding are unemployed in Sunderland; and from which trades they come.

Mr. Iain Macleod

Separate figures for shipbuilding are not compiled, but for shipbuilding and ship repairing combined, the total was 762 at 13th April. An occupational analysis of this figure is not available.

80. Mr, P. Williams

asked the Minister of Labour what is the latest figure of unemployed men and women in Sunderland; how this compares with earlier figures; and what are the immediate prospects of reducing this figure.

Mr. Iain Macleod

Three thousand, three hundred and sixty-three men and 1,101 women at 13th April compared with 2,292 men and 659 women a year ago, and 3,366 and 1,102 women in March. I hope that both seasonal factors and a general revival of the economy will bring about some improvement in the next few months.
