HC Deb 23 April 1959 vol 604 c55W
8. Mr. Osborne

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what was the total consumption and the estimated consumption per head of cheese, butter, margarine and eggs for the years 1951 and 1958, respectively.

Mr. Hare

The figures show substantial increases for butter and eggs, a slight decrease for cheese and a fall in margarine which is, of course, mainly due to the increase in butter. The information is as follows:

ESTIMATED SUPPLIES MOVING INTO CONSUMPTION IN THE UNITED KINGDOM
Thousand tons lb. per head per annum (a)
1951 1958 (provisional) 1951 1958 (provisional)
Cheese 235 230 10.5 9.8
Butter 332 468 14.6 20.3
Margarine 420 326 18.7 13.6
Eggs in shell 552 696 24.5 29.2
(a) After allowing for changes in stocks and for a cer-tain amount of wastage in distribution.
