HC Deb 21 April 1959 vol 604 cc31-2W
70 and 72. Mr. G. Thomas

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies (1) what was the number of people registered as unemployed in the Seychelles at the most convenient recent date; and what rate of maintenance benefit is given to them;

(2) whether he will make a statement on the registration of unemployed people in the Seychelles.

Mr. J. Amery

There are no persons registered as unemployed in Seychelles and no registers are kept for that purpose. No unemployed (or maintenance) benefit is or can be paid. The future plans of the Colony include the strengthening of the Labour and Welfare Department. When adequate funds and trained staff are available, consideration will be given to intro- ducing legislation for the registration of employed and unemployed persons in Seychelles.
