HC Deb 20 April 1959 vol 604 c8W
86. Mr. Hector Hughes

asked the Minister of Labour how many miners are now unemployed in Scotland, England and Wales, respectively; and what are his plans for finding employment for them.

Mr. lain Macleod

Eight hundred and thirty-six in Scotland, 3,598 in England and 1,946 in Wales at 9th March. Of these, about 80 in Scotland, 700 in England and 1,100 in Wales were displaced from collieries closed this year by the National Coal Board, who hope to re-engage a substantial number of the men.

My local officers will do their best to help unemployed miners by submitting them to notified vacancies.
