HC Deb 16 April 1959 vol 603 cc97-8W
Mr. Hector Hughes

asked the Minister of Labour if he will make a statement on the organisation, policy and working of Remploy in North-East Scotland, giving figures for each of the last ten years.

Mr. Wood

asked The Remploy factory at Aberdeen provides sheltered employment for severely disabled persons in North-East Scotland. The following table shows the average number of severely disabled workers employed in each year since the factory was set up:

1951–52 18
1952–53 29
1953–54 35
1954–55 36
1955–56 36
1956–57 35
1957–58 32
1958–59 32

The present capacity of the factory is 38 and at present a full complement of 27 men and 11 women is employed on the production of knitwear for Government Departments and the commercial market. Further expansion must depend on the availability of suitable work, and I understand that Remploy would welcome the introduction of a sponsorship scheme at this factory.
