HC Deb 15 April 1959 vol 603 cc73-4W
48. Mr. Stonehouse

asked the Minister of Labour what measures he is taking to deal with the serious unemployment situation in the Wednesbury constituency.

Mr. Iain Macleod

As the unemployment rate in this area on 9th March was under 2 per cent., I cannot accept the hon. Member's view that the situation is serious. My local officers will, of course, continue to submit those without jobs to vacancies notified to them.

Mr. Stonehouse

asked the Minister of Labour whether he will give the number registered as unemployed and on short time at the employment exchanges in the Wednesbury constituency on the latest available date, and the corresponding date in 1951.

Mr. Iain Macleod

1,021 on 9th March, 1959, and 106 on 12th March, 1951. Of these, 295 and 13, respectively, were registered as temporarily stopped.
