HC Deb 15 April 1959 vol 603 c79W
62. Mr. J. Hynd

asked the Postmaster-General whether he will use his powers under Section 15 (4) of the Licence and Agreement and Section 9 (2) of the Television Act, 1953, to require the British Broadcasting Corporation and the Independent Television Authority to refrain from sending any broadcasts containing bad language or scenes of violence and cruelty or promiscuous drinking; and what representations he has received from the Sheffield Methodist Mission on this matter.

Mr. K. Thompson

No. The content of programmes is a matter for the British Broadcasting Corporation and Independent Television Authority, and I see no reason to intervene as suggested. As to the last part of the Question, I have not been able to trace that the Sheffield Methodist Mission has written to me.
