HC Deb 14 April 1959 vol 603 cc70-1W
Mr. Robens

asked the Prime Minister (1) when he expects the Report, or interim Report, of the Committee set up by the Atomic Energy Authority to advise on training in radiological protection, under the chairmanship of Sir Douglas Veale, to be completed; and whether he will publish that report;

(2) what consideration is being given by the Veale Committee to pay and conditions of service of personnel trained in radiological protection;

(3) what consideration is being given by the Veale Committee to the sources from which the staff should be recruited for work in radiological protection.

The Prime Minister

The Veale Committee has made two interim reports on specific aspects of its work, and the Atomic Energy Authority intends to make an announcement about them soon. The final report is not expected until later this year, and I understand that it is the Authority's intention to publish it, after consultation with the appropriate Government Departments.

The specific matters referred to by the right hon. Gentleman are under consideration by the Veale Committee, and recommendations will no doubt be included in its final report.

Mr. Robens

asked the Prime Minister if it is the policy of the Government to train all individuals in connection with safety in nuclear installaton plants at Harwell, or to set up special training establishments elsewhere.

The Prime Minister

This is one of the questions on which the Veale Committee has been asked to make recommendations. It is still being studied by the Committee, and will be dealt with in its final report.
