HC Deb 08 April 1959 vol 603 cc17-8W
Mr. Sydney Irving

asked the Minister of Labour what percentage of the total population was registered as employed in each of the last five years.

Mr. Iain Macleod

I assume that the information desired is the percentage that the number of persons aged 15 and over in employment (including H.M. Forces and Women's Services, but excluding the unemployed) represents of the total population aged 15 and over. The following table gives the figures on this basis for the years 1954 to 1958. Since the percentages for females are very different from those for males they are shown separately in the table.

TOTAL NUMBERS OF PERSONS AGED 15 AND OVER IN EMPLOYMENT IN GREAT BRITAIN AT THE UNDERMENTIONED DATES EXPRESSED AS PERCENTAGES OF THE TOTAL POPULATION AGED 15 AND OVER AT THE SAME DATES.
Males Females Total
End June, 1954 86.6 37.7 61.0
End June, 1955 87.2 38.4 61.6
End June, 1956 87.5 38.8 62.0
End June, 1957 87.3 38.9 61.9
End June, 1958 86.1 38.3 61.0
