87. Mr. Prentice

asked the Minister of Labour what is the present size of the Factory Inspectorate, both in its general and specialised branches; and to what extent it is below the planned establishment.

Mr. Iain Macleod

On 7th November, 1958, the number of Inspectors employed in the General Inspectorate was 343. Nine were awaiting appointment and there were five vacancies.

In the specialist branches 64 were employed. There were eight vacancies in the Engineering Branch, 11 in the Chemical Branch and two in the Medical Inspectorate. An open competition is now in progress with a view to filling the vacancies in the Engineering and Chemical Branches. One additional Medical Inspector will shortly take up duty.
