HC Deb 12 November 1958 vol 595 cc35-6W
48. Mr. Shinwell

asked the Minister of Defence whether he has satisfied himself that it is safe and in the public interest for Service families to remain in Cyprus; and whether he will make a statement.

Mr. Sandys

This is a difficult question to which the Government have naturally given most careful thought. After consulting the Governor and the military authorities in Cyprus, we have come to the conclusion that, for the present, we should not be justified in ordering Service families to leave the island. Of course, any who wish to leave are free to do so, and will be brought home at public expense.
