HC Deb 04 November 1958 vol 594 cc23-4W
39. Mr. Prentice

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether, following upon the recent conclusion of the dock strike at Mombasa, he will arrange for the appointment of an independent committee of inquiry to study conditions at the port, as requested by the Dockworkers' Union.

Mr. Lennox-Boyd

With the agreement of the Dockworkers' Union and the Port Employers' Association, obtained before the strike began, steps are being taken to establish a Board of Inquiry to study working conditions in the port.

Mr. Brockway

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies how many prisoners have been employed to do the work of strikers at Mombasa Docks, Kenya; and under what powers convict labour was so employed.

Mr. Lennox-Boyd

At the height of the strike about 520 convicts were employed at Mombasa Docks, by authority of Section 62 of the Prisons Ordinance, 1948.
