HC Deb 04 November 1958 vol 594 cc33-4W
77 and 78. Mr. Pitman

asked the Secretary to the Treasury (1) what help is given by the Government Departments to their servants, civil and combatant, who are parents of children of school age and who are in employment which, on repeated posting, requires frequent changes of residence and so of school for their children, to enable them to meet the costs either of boarding school or of the lodging which is essential for continuity of education;

(2) whether he will consult with the Ministers concerned with a view to establishing a system of adequate educational allowance to the children of Government servants., both civil and combatant, and so set an example as good employers which others may follow.

Mr. Simon

I am circulating in the OFFICIAL REPORT particulars of the allowance's paid to civil servants in the Home Service when posted overseas. The rates for the Foreign Service are a matter for my right hon. Friend the Foreign Secretary. Those for the Armed Forces are for my right hon. Friend the Minister of Defence.

I do not consider that any further consultation with the Ministers concerned is required.

Following is the statement: Allowances paid in respect of the Education of Children of Home Service Civil Servants posted Overseas. For children at boarding school in the United Kingdom—

First child £75 a year
Second child £100 a year
Third and subsequent children £125 a year
Guardian allowance for second and subsequent children at day school in the United Kingdom £35 a year
These are the agreed rates of contribution towards the extra cost incurred by Home Service civil servants when posted overseas if both parents are at the overseas station and the child is left in the United Kingdom. They are payable as supplements to the ordinary overseas allowances.
