HC Deb 01 May 1958 vol 587 cc52-3W
93. Mr. Teeling

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies what were the terms on which the Governor of Malta asked Dr. Borg Olivier to take over the Malta Administration; and what were the reasons for Dr. Borg Olivier's refusal to take up this task.

Mr. Lennox-Boyd

On 22nd April, the Governor asked Dr. Borg Olivier if he was prepared, pending elections, to form a caretaker Government, and made it clear that, in the event of his being willing to do so, Her Majesty's Government would be ready to makepro rata cash issues within the ceiling of £5 million for the whole year.

As subsequently announced, Dr. Borg Olivier informed the Governor next day that, without a mandate from the electorate, he was not prepared to take office and form a Government.
