§ Mr. MaclayThe most recent period for which definite figures are available is the year ended 31st March, 1957. In that year the average weekly net cost per prisoner in Scottish prisons was £6 19s. 11d. excluding the cost of new buildings. The corresponding figure for England and Wales was £7 12s. 6d.
