§ 86. Mr. G. Jegerasked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether he is aware of the inadequacy of the income of the Arts Council to maintain such artistic activities as receive its approval, and which it is in the national interest should be encouraged; and whether he will move to appoint a Select Committee to inquire into the position of the arts and to make recommendations for a national policy to ensure their survival.
§ Mr. SimonThis Government have practically doubled the Arts Council grant in seven years and are proposing to increase it by 11 per cent. to £1,100,000 for 1958–59. I think this is a very generous record. The answer to the second part of the Question is "No"
