HC Deb 14 March 1958 vol 584 c96W
Lady Tweedsmuir

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether the United Kingdom will be associated with the European Common Market on the same terms as with the European Coal and Steel Community.

Mr. Maudling

No. In the case of the European Coal and Steel Community there is an agreement for consultation between the United Kingdom and the Community through a Council of Association.

In he case of the Free Trade Area the United Kingdom would be a full member with the same obligations as the other members, including the signatories of the Treaty of Rome.
