§ Mr. J. Johnsonasked the Under-Secretary of State for Commonwealth Relations what action he is taking to improve secondary education in Bechuanaland Protectorate with particular reference to the supply of specialist teachers and to their rates of pay.
§ Mr. AlportTwo schools in the Bechuanaland Protectorate offer full secondary education. These are Moeng College and St. Joseph's College, Khale. At present both have vacancies for pupils. Each school receives an annual grant from the Government and benefits generally from the Colonial Development and Welfare expenditure on education in the Protectorate.
Moeng College has, in the past, experienced difficulty in obtaining specialist secondary staff but I understand that the staff position is reasonable at present. St. Joseph's College employs Mission staff. At Moeng College professionally qualified graduate teachers are paid on a scale which compares favourably with that paid in the Union of South Africa to teachers similarly qualified.
