Mr. Foot

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies the number of applications for passports in each of the last five years, and the number of such applications granted, in Uganda, Kenya, Tanganyika, Zanzibar, Northern Rhodesia and Nyasaland.

NOTES:

(1) Full records of applications are not kept in Tanganyika, Kenya, or Nyasaland. There are many applications which lapse or are withdrawn, such as those made to cover travel to neighbouring territories for which no passports are necessary. The following applications over the five years have been refused: Kenya, 2; Tanganyika, 6; and Nyasaland, nil.

(2) Refusals in Northern Rhodesia relate mainly to Africans who apply for passports for travel to territories where such travel documents are not required.
