§ 15. Mr. Jannerasked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will give an estimate of the amount of Income Tax contributed by ex-Service widows in respect of the pensions they receive following the deaths of their husbands in the last two wars; what this amount would be if Income Tax were charged at earned income rates; and whether he will consider abolishing Income Tax altogether on these pensions or charging the tax at the same rate as that on earned income.
Mr. AmoryPossibly about £2 million. The pensions already attract earned income relief. I could not agree to exempt them from tax.
