Bossomasked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food if he will institute research into the question of producing hops suitable for the making of lager beer; and, in the event of English hops proving unsuitable, if the breeding of suitable varieties may be instituted, subject to safeguards from pests and diseases.
§ Mr. John HareResearch on the breeding of suitable hops for brewing lager beer has just been started in the Hop Department of Wye College. Standard hops for lager brewing come mainly from the foreign varieties Hallertau and Saag. Wye College already has Hallertau breeding material and has arranged to import a Saag variety in the spring.
