HC Deb 21 January 1958 vol 580 cc158-9W
115. Mr. Gooch

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he is aware of the complaints of two British Post Office engineers that they were marched at rifle point by an American guard when dealing with a line fault at Sculthorpe Air Base; and if he will take steps to ensure that such an humiliating experience does not befall any other Britisher discharging his duties in England.

Mr. R. A. Butler

I understand that the United States Service authorities have expressed their regret to all concerned for the incident to which the hon. Member refers, which arose as a result of a misunderstanding. Both the United States Service authorities and the British authorities concerned are anxious to avoid any repetition of such incidents, and discussions have taken place to this end.
