Information is not available in the form requested, but I would estimate that capital expenditure by the oil companies on filling stations under their own ownership amounted to about £2 million in 1956 and £3 million in 1957, the total number of stations concerned in the two years taken together being between five and six hundred. The total number of filling stations in the country is about 30,000 and changes little from year to year.
