Mr. Brockway

asked the Under-Secretary of State for Commonwealth Relations the number of Africans in Basutoland who have applied during the years 1956 to 1958, inclusive, for training as engineers and technicians, and the number who have attained matriculation certificates during the same period.

Mr. Alport

During the years 1956, 1957 and 1958 to date, two Africans from Basutoland have applied for university training as engineers and technicians.

As regards the second part of the Question, the 1958 examination has not yet taken place. During the three years 1955–57, 17 Basuto obtained full matriculation.
