40. Mr. Cooper

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if, in view of the continuing large unsatisfied demands for finance for house purchase, he will authorise the Public Works Loan Board to make advances to local authorities for this specific purpose.

Mr. Amory

The Public Works Loan Board can already lend to any local authority that cannot borrow elsewhere, but I cannot agree that loans for this purpose should be made on demand.
