HC Deb 04 February 1958 vol 581 cc148-9W
70. Mr. Dodds

asked the Minister of Housing and Local Government and Minister for Welsh Affairs what guidance he has given to local authorities in respect of their house-building programmes for 1958 and 1959.

Mr. H. Brooke

I am sending the hon. Member a copy of the Circular which I sent on 11th November last, to local authorities.

77. Mr. Awbery

asked the Minister of Housing and Local Government and Minister for Welsh Affairs how many houses, now scheduled as slum clearance areas, will carry the subsidy when they are being replaced; and to what extent the housing programmes of local authorities have been reduced since the withdrawal of the subsidy on ordinary house building.

Mr. H. Brooke

Under present subsidy arrangements any houses provided by a local authority to replace unfit houses will attract subsidy. The number of houses completed by local authorities was virtually the same in 1957 as in 1956. As I explained to the House during the debate on the Address, it will be necessary to slow down the rate of building by local authorities somewhat over the next year or so.
