HC Deb 18 December 1958 vol 597 c320W
Mr. Dodds

asked the Minister of Health what is the latest year for which statistics are available giving, separately, the number of persons certified under the Lunacy Act, 1890, where the procedure requires only one doctor, and the procedure needing two doctors; and what are these figures, respectively.

Mr. Walker-Smith

The number of persons certified during 1957 under Section 6 of the Lunacy Act, 1890, which requires that the petition for a reception order shall be accompanied by two medical certificates, was 38.

Precise information is not available as to the number of persons certified under the provisions of the Lunacy Act, 1890, requiring that the reception order shall be founded upon one medical certificate. These persons comprise, however, the vast majority of the remaining 14,381 certified direct admissions which took place during the year.
