HC Deb 16 December 1958 vol 597 cc199-200W
Mr. Biggs-Davison

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs what steps are being taken to carry out the undertaking he gave to the Libyan Government earlier this year to assist them in strengthening the Libyan Army.

Mr. Profumo

As a result of the talks which my right hon. and learned Friend held with the Libyan Prime Minister in May about the level of Her Majesty's Government's assistance to the Libyan Government during the current five-year period of the Anglo-Libyan Treaty of 1953, it was agreed that Her Majesty's Government should provide free of cost the small arms and light equipment necessary for an expanded Libyan Army of up to 5,000 men.

It is expected that the first instalment of these arms and equpiment will be delivered in January next year. The House will be asked to vote the necessary financial provision in due course.
